Our founder and owner—the only woman-owned roofing company owner in all of Broome County, NY, and a proud minority of Mexican heritage—didn’t arrive in New York chasing a dream. She arrived chasing hope.
When Everything Was Taken Away
In 2018, Hurricane Michael tore through Panama City, Florida, changing lives forever. Like thousands of others, our owner was forced to evacuate with her family, leaving behind the home she loved and the life she had built.
When she returned, there was nothing left.
A tree had torn straight through her house. The neighborhood she once knew was reduced to rubble. Personal belongings—memories, milestones, pieces of a lifetime—were destroyed beyond recovery.
“It felt like the end,” she recalls. “I didn’t know where we would go, or how we would start over.”
With her children and family, she road-tripped for three exhausting days to New York—uncertain, grieving, and determined not to give up. She faced the quiet humiliation of homelessness, the fear every parent knows when stability disappears, and the weight of starting over in a state where she had to find her footing all over again.
But she never stopped moving forward.
A Spark Reignited
She found work. Then lost it when the company laid off employees.
And then—unexpectedly—she found roofing.
What looked like just another job became something more. Something familiar.
Her father had been a foreman and contractor. As a child, she spent her days alongside him on job sites, learning the construction trade long before she realized how deeply it had shaped her.
“Growing up in construction, I never realized how much I loved it—or how good I was at it—until I started working for another home improvement company. That’s when it clicked. When you love what you do, the work doesn’t feel heavy. It feels purposeful.”
That moment lit the fire.

In 2021, she officially registered 1st Choice Roofers & Renovations as a Broome County, NY business. What started with grit and determination has now become a company five years strong—built on craftsmanship, trust, and community.
